Cannabinoids Explained: The Natural Compounds That Make Cannabis Unique

Cannabinoids are the naturally occurring chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Scientists have identified more than 100 phytocannabinoids in cannabis, each with its own chemical structure and biological activity. The two best-known cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid responsible for the intoxicating effects commonly associated with cannabis. CBD, by contrast, is not intoxicating and has become the focus of extensive scientific research. Beyond these two compounds, cannabis also contains numerous minor cannabinoids, including CBG (cannabigerol), CBN (cannabinol), CBC (cannabichromene), and THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin). Interestingly, cannabis plants do not initially produce THC or CBD in their final forms. Instead, they produce acidic cannabinoid precursors such as THCA, CBDA, and CBGA inside tiny resin glands called glandular trichomes. When cannabis is heated through smoking, vaporization, or cooking, a process called decarboxylation converts these acidic compounds into their active forms, including THC and CBD. Cannabinoids exert their effects by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a widespread signaling network that includes CB1 and CB2 receptors, naturally produced endocannabinoids, and enzymes responsible for creating and breaking down those molecules. The ECS plays a role in regulating numerous normal physiological processes, including appetite, sleep, mood, memory, pain signaling, immune function, and learning. Modern cannabis products contain cannabinoids in many different forms. Flower naturally contains cannabinoid acids before heating. Concentrates such as live resin, live rosin, wax, shatter, badder, distillate, and THCA diamonds concentrate cannabinoids from the plant’s trichomes. Edibles, beverages, tinctures, vape cartridges, capsules, and topicals may also contain measured cannabinoid formulations created from refined cannabis extracts.

Although THC percentage often receives the most attention, experienced consumers increasingly recognize that cannabinoid content tells only part of the story. Terpenes, cultivation methods, harvest timing, drying, curing, extraction techniques, and storage conditions all contribute to the overall chemical profile of a cannabis product. Two products with similar THC levels may differ substantially in aroma, flavor, and composition because of these additional factors. Researchers continue studying how cannabinoids and other naturally occurring cannabis compounds interact, but many aspects of these interactions remain under investigation. (PMC)
