
Cannabinoids Explained: Understanding the Compounds That Power Cannabis

Cannabinoids are the active chemical compounds found in cannabis that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors responsible for helping regulate mood, sleep, appetite, pain perception, memory, immune response, and overall balance. Scientists have identified more than 150 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, and research continues to uncover how these compounds influence the human body.
The two best-known cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is responsible for the euphoric or intoxicating effects commonly associated with cannabis, while CBD is non-intoxicating and is often chosen by consumers looking for relaxation without the traditional “high.” Although these two dominate the market, they represent only a small portion of the cannabis plant’s chemical complexity.
Many premium cannabis cultivars also contain minor cannabinoids that may contribute to the overall experience. CBG (cannabigerol) is often called the “mother cannabinoid” because many cannabinoids begin as CBGA before being converted into THC, CBD, or CBC as the plant matures. CBN (cannabinol) develops as THC naturally degrades over time and is frequently associated with aged cannabis. CBC (cannabichromene) and THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) are also gaining attention as researchers continue studying their unique properties and potential applications.
Cannabinoids work by interacting with two primary receptors in the endocannabinoid system: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain and central nervous system, making them largely responsible for THC’s psychoactive effects. CB2 receptors are concentrated throughout the immune system and peripheral tissues, where they play a role in regulating inflammation and immune function.
One of the biggest misconceptions among cannabis consumers is that higher THC automatically means better cannabis. While THC contributes significantly to potency, experienced consumers often discover that the overall cannabinoid profile, terpene content, cultivation quality, harvest timing, curing process, and freshness all influence the final experience. A flower testing at 22% THC with a rich terpene profile can provide a more enjoyable and balanced session than one testing above 30% THC but lacking aromatic complexity.
Heat also changes cannabinoids. Raw cannabis primarily contains THCA, the acidic precursor to THC. Through a process called decarboxylation, which occurs during smoking, vaping, or cooking, THCA converts into active THC. Similarly, CBDA converts into CBD when heated. Proper storage is equally important because exposure to heat, oxygen, and light gradually breaks down cannabinoids, reducing potency and altering the product’s overall profile.
Consumers today have more options than ever, including flower, concentrates, vape cartridges, tinctures, edibles, and topicals. Regardless of the product type, understanding cannabinoids can help shoppers make informed decisions based on their goals instead of relying solely on THC percentages. Reading a Certificate of Analysis (COA) can provide insight into cannabinoid levels, terpene profiles, and product quality.
As cannabis research expands, our understanding of cannabinoids continues to evolve. While many compounds show promise, scientists are still studying their individual effects and how they work together. This growing body of research is helping consumers move beyond simple potency numbers and appreciate cannabis as a complex botanical containing dozens of naturally occurring compounds that each contribute to the overall experience.
