Cannabis & Sex: What the Science Actually Says

By Justice — Elevated Club NYC

Cannabis and sex have long been linked anecdotally, but recent research offers clearer insight into how marijuana may affect intimacy, pleasure, and performance.

Across multiple studies and reviews, a consistent pattern emerges: many people report enhanced sexual experiences with cannabis, especially at lower to moderate doses. Users often describe increased relaxation, heightened physical sensation, stronger orgasms, and an easier time staying present during sex. These effects are commonly tied to how cannabis interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in mood, stress, and pleasure.

Women, in particular, report notable benefits. Survey-based studies show women who use cannabis before sex are more likely to experience satisfying orgasms, increased desire, and reduced discomfort. Frequent users also report higher overall sexual satisfaction.

For men, the research is more mixed. While some report reduced anxiety and increased enjoyment, certain studies suggest a possible association between frequent cannabis use and erectile difficulties. Importantly, these findings are correlational—not definitive—and more controlled research is still needed.

A key takeaway across all sources: dose and individual response matter. Lower doses are more likely to enhance intimacy, while higher doses may reduce focus, arousal, or connection for some people. Strain choice, mindset, environment, and communication with a partner all play major roles in the experience.

Bottom line: Cannabis doesn’t affect everyone the same way, but for many adults, it may enhance sexual pleasure, relaxation, and connection when used intentionally and responsibly. As research continues to evolve, understanding your own body—and respecting your partner’s experience—remains essential.
