THC percentage represents how much tetrahydrocannabinol is present in a cannabis product by weight. For flower, this is shown as a percentage. For edibles, THC is measured in milligrams per serving. These numbers are not estimates or opinions—they are produced through controlled laboratory science.


The process begins with sample collection and preparation. Licensed labs receive a representative sample of the product. Cannabis flower is ground and homogenized so cannabinoids are evenly distributed. Concentrates and oils are diluted, while edibles are blended or dissolved. Precise weights are recorded so potency can be calculated accurately.


Next comes cannabinoid extraction. Labs use food-grade solvents, commonly ethanol or methanol, to pull cannabinoids out of the sample. This creates a liquid extract that can be analyzed by laboratory instruments.


The core of THC testing happens during lab analysis. The most widely used method is High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, or HPLC. This method does not use heat, which allows labs to measure THCA and delta-9 THC separately. Because most cannabis contains far more THCA than active THC before heating, this distinction is critical. HPLC is the industry standard and is required by most regulated cannabis programs.


Some labs also use Gas Chromatography, or GC. This method uses heat, which automatically converts THCA into THC during testing. As a result, GC reports total THC only and does not distinguish between cannabinoids in their natural state. Because of this, GC is less ideal for potency labeling and is more commonly used for terpene analysis.


Once cannabinoid levels are measured, labs calculate total THC using a standardized formula. Total THC percentage equals the measured delta-9 THC percentage plus the THCA percentage multiplied by 0.877. The 0.877 factor accounts for molecular weight lost when THCA converts into THC through heat, such as when cannabis is smoked or vaporized.


After testing is complete, labs issue a Certificate of Analysis, commonly called a COA. This document lists THC and CBD levels, other cannabinoids, terpene profiles, and results from safety screenings such as pesticides, heavy metals, mold, and residual solvents. In legal markets, COAs are required for products to be sold.


It’s important to understand that THC percentage is not the full story. THC levels can vary between different buds on the same plant. Labs test small samples, not entire harvests. Storage conditions, light exposure, heat, and time can all affect potency. Most importantly, effects are influenced by terpenes, individual tolerance, and consumption method. Two products with identical THC percentages can produce very different experiences.
