THC Isn’t the Whole Story: How Terpenes Shape the Cannabis Experience

By Justice, Elevated Club NYC

For years, cannabis consumers have been trained to chase a single number: THC percentage. Higher THC became synonymous with better quality, stronger effects, and more value. But as the market matures and consumers become more educated, one thing is becoming clear — THC alone doesn’t tell the full story.

Two strains can test at the same THC level and produce completely different experiences. One may feel uplifting and creative, while the other feels heavy and sedating. The difference often comes down to terpenes — the aromatic compounds that give cannabis its smell, flavor, and much of its effect.

Terpenes are found throughout nature in plants like citrus, pine, lavender, and herbs. In cannabis, they interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to shape how a strain actually feels. This interaction, often referred to as the “entourage effect,” helps explain why cannabis isn’t one-size-fits-all.

For example, limonene is commonly associated with brighter, more energetic effects, while myrcene tends to lean more relaxing. Pinene may feel clear-headed and focused, while linalool often brings calming, body-forward sensations. These compounds don’t just influence aroma — they influence experience.

When cannabis is rushed through cultivation, dried too quickly, or stored improperly, terpenes are often the first thing lost. That’s why flower that looks great on the outside can still smoke flat or feel one-dimensional. Quality is built through genetics, proper harvesting, careful curing, and preservation — not just lab numbers or loud packaging.

At Elevated Club NYC, we believe cannabis should be evaluated by how it feels, not just how it tests. Flavor, aroma, smoothness, and consistency matter. Standards matter. The future of cannabis isn’t about chasing the highest percentage — it’s about understanding the full profile and choosing products that deliver a better, more intentional experience.

Because in the end, cannabis isn’t just chemistry. It’s craft.
