A recent opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal titled “This Isn’t Your Parents’ ‘Woodstock Weed’” argues that modern cannabis is dramatically more potent than the flower of the 1960s and 70s — and that legalization efforts, like Florida’s Amendment 3, risk unleashing dangerously high THC levels into the mainstream.
Let’s unpack that.
Yes — today’s cannabis is stronger. Decades ago, THC levels averaged around 2–5%. Today, premium indoor flower can range from 18–30%, with concentrates climbing much higher. That’s not mythology. That’s cultivation science, better genetics, and regulated lab testing.
But potency alone doesn’t define risk. Context does.
In regulated markets like New York, consumers aren’t buying mystery brick weed. They’re purchasing lab-tested products with clearly labeled THC percentages, terpene profiles, and dosage guidance. That transparency didn’t exist at Woodstock. Ironically, legalization is what creates accountability — not chaos.
The debate shouldn’t be framed as “old weed good, new weed dangerous.” It should be framed around education, responsible consumption, age restrictions, and smart regulation. Alcohol today is stronger and more varied than it was 100 years ago. That didn’t end the conversation — it refined it.
High-THC products aren’t for everyone. Just like high-proof liquor isn’t for everyone. The key is informed choice. Consumers deserve access to information, not fear-based headlines.
At Elevated Club NYC, we believe education is elevation. We advocate:
• 21+ responsible use
• Clear potency labeling
• Start-low, go-slow guidance
• Respect for individual tolerance
The plant has evolved. The market has evolved. The conversation should evolve too.
This isn’t your parents’ Woodstock weed.
It’s regulated. It’s tested. It’s transparent.
And in places doing it right, it’s safer than ever.
